Decision: A ‘decision’ regarding the type of treatment needed is the next step in caring for a patient with a stroke. Information, such as the type of stroke which has occurred and the time from onset of symptoms, is considered before a treatment decision is made. The severity of the stroke may also play a role in deciding what the most appropriate treatment will be. The patient and family members should also be informed of the risks and benefits of treatment options.
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s website, numerous published studies demonstrate the Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke program’s success in improving patient outcomes. Since it started in 2003, more than 2,000 hospitals have entered more than 5 million patient records into the Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke database.

“We are thrilled to support the University of Louisville Hospital – Comprehensive Stroke Center’s U Care program with our RN-led clinical AfterCare model. Patients and their caregivers need more resources and ongoing support when managing the transition from a hospitalization to another setting or home. We look forward to implementing this model and future programs to help UofL Hospital provide a differentiated patient experience for the communities it serves,” said Dr. Brian Holzer, CEO of Lacuna Health.
“At UofL Hospital, we continually strive for excellence in the acute treatment of stroke patients,” said Dr. Kerri Remmel, medical director of the UofL Hospital Stroke Center and chair of the UofL Department of Neurology. “U Care adds the vital step of thoroughly programmed follow-up with stroke patients to ensure they continue recovery, avoid unnecessary readmission to the hospital and prevent a second stroke.”
The Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program was developed by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association to help healthcare professionals align stroke care with the most up-to-date scientific treatment guidelines. Stroke treatment guidelines include aggressive therapies and medications that can help improve patient care and outcomes. Hospitals must follow these measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for achievement awards.

“We are currently negotiating funding with the HSE, to further develop the service so that it’s rapidly available to everybody,” says Thornton. “We began the service without any additional funding or new structures in place. There are charities such as the Irish Heart Foundation that are currently in the process of reviewing guidelines to publish a formal protocol for patients and doctors on how to approach and deal with a large-vessel stroke. But we need the HSE to formally recognise the importance of medical thrombectomy and to support urgent development of the service because it is essential that stroke patients in Ireland are getting the best standard of care possible.”

Best Personal Care is a wonderful facility. I put my father at this facility 10 months ago. The staff at Best Personal Care communicated consistently and helped my father to become independent again. They made sure that he took all his meds and took him to his doctor appointments. They also were very helpful in making sure that he had continuous activities to help keep his mind occupied. I highly recommend Best Personal Care. Arnie and Anglelina are very caring people. My father has been to many other facilities that were not near as proactive with his care. Best Personal Care lives up to their name and made a big difference in helping my father to get better and be able to live independently again.

A stroke, also called a brain attack, occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted. This disruption is caused when either a blood clot block one of the vital blood vessels in the brain (ischemic stroke), or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, spilling blood into surrounding tissues (hemorrhagic stroke). The brain needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients in order to function and its cells begin to die after just a few minutes without either.
In the United States, most of the large multi-facility providers are publicly owned and managed as for-profit businesses.[10] There are exceptions; the largest operator in the US is the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, a not-for-profit organization that manages 6,531 beds in 22 states, according to a 1995 study by the American Health Care Association.[14]
SeniorCare Inc. was founded in 1972, and has evolved into a multi-faceted non-profit organization that now provides consumers with a one stop portal for elder and disability services and information.  We provide assistance through many avenues: Meals on Wheels, the Massachusetts Home Care program, and other supportive services.  We also have evidence-based wellness programs and volunteer services.
If your stroke affected the right side of your brain, your movement and sensation on the left side of your body may be affected. If your stroke damaged the brain tissue on the left side of your brain, your movement and sensation on the right side of your body may be affected. Brain damage to the left side of your brain may cause speech and language disorders.

With a long history of providing stroke rehabilitation to its patients, Craig Hospital can fulfill any type of health care need that your loved one might have. Maintaining a close relationship with numerous trauma centers, this facility offers great health care support to stroke patients. With extensive experience in treating both adolescent and adult patients, the doctors at Craig Hospital take part in interdisciplinary teams that help treat each stage of stroke damage. The care units offer two therapy gyms, a supervised activity room, and special rooms designed for individual therapy. Most patients begin treatment in the West Unit, and as they progress with rehabilitation and recovery, they can move to the East Unit. The various therapy classes at Craig Hospital include a skills class, a fit class, a speech group, and educational programs.
Door: The fourth step in the chain of survival is ‘door’, which refers to the arrival of the patient at the emergency room (ED). Ideally, the stroke team should be in place at the receiving facility prior to the patient’s arrival to ensure prompt assessment and diagnosis. According to recommendations from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, an assessment should be completed by an ER physician within ten minutes of arriving in the ED.

If you think you are having a stroke, call 911 so an ambulance can quickly get to the hospital. When talking to 911, an emergency medical service or the hospital, be sure to use the word “stroke” in order to possibly speed up a diagnosis. Every minute counts when treating a stroke, raising the number of brain cells that can be saved and chances for recovery.

In fact, they noted, "When performance of PAA-recognized hospitals with PSC certification was compared to PAA recognized hospitals without PSC certification, there were no significant differences (all-or-none summary performance measure adjusted odds ratio 1.02 [0.93-1.14], P=0.5935 for PAA+/PSC+ hospitals with PAA+/PSC- as reference)."
