Your doctor will check your blood pressure and use a stethoscope to listen to your heart and to listen for a whooshing sound (bruit) over your neck (carotid) arteries, which may indicate atherosclerosis. Your doctor may also use an ophthalmoscope to check for signs of tiny cholesterol crystals or clots in the blood vessels at the back of your eyes.
Would home-cooked meals, help around the house and rides to the store make all the difference for you or your aging loved one? This most basic (and often most affordable) type of in-home care generally includes light housekeeping, companionship, meal preparation, and help with errands. You can hire help to come on a regular weekly schedule or only as needed. Expect to pay about $15-$40/hour for this type of service, depending where you live.
Ischemic strokes are the most common. They occur when an artery is blocked and blood flow to the brain is stopped. Caused by build-ups of fatty deposits on the inside of an artery wall which then becomes completely clogged. Ischemic strokes account for eighty percent of all strokes suffered. Some ischemic strokes are preceded by stroke-like symptoms called transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). These may occur months before the stroke. The loss of vision in a TIA may be described as a feeling that a shade is being pulled down over your eyes. The symptoms are usually temporary and improve within 10 to 20 minutes.
One relatively new service in the United States that can help keep older people in their homes longer is respite care. This type of care allows caregivers the opportunity to go on vacation or a business trip and know that their family member has good quality temporary care, for without this help the elder might have to move permanently to an outside facility. Another unique type of care cropping in U.S. hospitals is called acute care of elder units, or ACE units, which provide "a homelike setting" within a medical center specifically for older adults.
The overall goal of stroke care is to minimize brain injury and optimize the individual’s recovery. Preferential transport to stroke-capable centers has been shown to improve outcomes. Stroke centers are equipped with resources often not available at smaller community hospitals. The presence of specialists, including neurologists and stroke care specialists, multidisciplinary teams experienced in stroke care, advanced imaging modalities, and other therapeutic options make transport to stroke centers the most suitable option. The goal of the stroke team, emergency physician, or other experts should be to assess the individual with suspected stroke within ten minutes.

Most stroke survivors receive treatment in a rehabilitation program. Your doctor will recommend the most rigorous therapy program you can handle based on your age, overall health and degree of disability from your stroke. Your doctor will take into consideration your lifestyle, interests and priorities, and the availability of family members or other caregivers.

Information about long-term care options in the United States can be found by contacting the local Area Agency on Aging or elder referral agencies such as Silver Living or A Place for Mom. On both occasions I used their service, the caregivers either left minimal or no notes while visiting my elderly parents (no eating, sleeping or bathroom data). After the first visit, I contacted a supervisor at Around the Clock and asked specifically that the caregivers leave notes on eating, sleeping patterns, etc. Instead of improving, on the 2nd visit I only received notes from 1 of 3 caregivers...I paid for 16 hours of caregiving for people who may or may not have even showed up for all I know. Their medical staff is also hit and miss. On my father's post-hospital rehab, one of the 3 nurses missed appts at the house repeatedly...only making 1 of 5 scheduled appointments. After this, I contacted Around the Clock and asked them to send out a more reliable nurse. In the 5 weeks that have passed since, we have received 1 visit from a nurse...nobody makes their scheduled appointments. Is this the care you want for your elderly parents??
